PRACTICAL PLANNING GUIDE
How to finish plywood edges: banding, solid edging or paint
By GrainBench · Updated October 22, 2026
Choose the edge treatment before cutting the panel to its final size. It affects appearance, preparation and sometimes the finished width or depth.

Which edge treatment should you choose?
Veneer banding gives a thin wood covering. A solid strip provides a thicker wood edge that must be included in the size plan. A painted edge needs a compatible preparation and coating system. An exposed plywood edge is another deliberate appearance choice when the actual core looks suitable.
Plan the edge as part of the piece
- Veneer tape
- Match its width to the measured panel thickness and allow for trimming as the product directs. Hot-melt and other adhesive systems have different application methods. The linked Sauers product is one heat-applied example, not an instruction for all banding.
- Solid strip
- Record the added thickness and the joining method. Prepare a sample to check the glue line, alignment and final edge profile. Do not count the strip as structural reinforcement without a separate assessment.
- Painted edge
- Include the cut edge in the primer and paint trial. Follow the selected filler, primer and paint instructions rather than assuming face preparation will also suit every exposed core.
Size example: if a finished top must be 600 mm deep and the front strip adds 6 mm, a flush rear edge leaves 594 mm for the panel depth before that strip is attached. This is dimension bookkeeping, not a recommendation for a 6 mm structural edge. Check your trimming method and final target before cutting.
- Mark only the edges that will remain visible.
- Measure their total length and select the edging product.
- Prepare a panel offcut using the full application, trimming and finish sequence.
- Check the result after the adhesive and coating have cured as instructed.
- Update the parts list with the finished size and any preparation allowance.
Common edge-treatment mistakes
- Forgetting the strip when calculating the finished dimension.
- Trimming into the decorative face or sanding through a thin veneer.
- Assuming banding makes an otherwise unsuitable panel waterproof.
What to buy and confirm
- Edging species or color, width, adhesive type and usable roll length.
- Compatible application and trimming tools.
- An allowance for end trimming and a sample piece; do not count offcuts twice.
- A finish trial that includes both the face and the edge.
