PRACTICAL PLANNING GUIDE
Adjustable vs. fixed shelves: pins, joints and dados
By GrainBench · Updated October 22, 2026
Choose adjustable shelves when you need to move or remove them. Choose fixed shelves when their positions belong to the case design. A fixed shelf can meet the side with a pinned joint or extend into a dado groove; those need different part lengths and machining.

Compare the three connections
| Connection | How it fits | What the plan must specify |
|---|---|---|
| Removable shelf | Rests on separate supports with an end gap. | Support model, stud diameter, hole positions and depth, shelf clearance. |
| Fixed, with connector pins | Square ends meet the inside faces of the sides. | Matched side-face and shelf-end holes; connector size and drilling depths. |
| Fixed, in dado grooves | Both ends enter shallow cuts across the side faces. | Longer shelf length, groove edges, width, depth and assembly sequence. |
Start with how you will use the shelf
For storage that changes, removable shelves let you rearrange the openings when the case has suitable alternative support positions. A plan with one set of holes per shelf is not yet a fully adjustable grid. Decide whether you actually need extra positions before drilling a long row.
A fixed shelf is assembled as part of the case. It cannot be lifted out later without undoing its connections. That can suit a permanent layout, but the choice still needs to account for the actual materials, span and loads. A joinery label alone is not a load rating.
A 30-inch case needs different shelf lengths
For an example case with two actual 3/4-inch sides, the clear inside width is 28 1/2 inches. A square-ended fixed shelf fits that width. A removable shelf with a 1/32-inch gap at each end is 28 7/16 inches long. If a recessed shelf enters a 1/4-inch groove in each side, its finished length is 29 inches.
Those three shelves are not interchangeable even though the outside case is identical. The dado shelf-length guide walks through the groove calculation. For any version, use measured thickness and the actual hardware fit rather than the nominal label on the sheet.
Through dados are visible at the front
A through dado runs from the front edge of the side to its rear edge. A stopped dado ends before an edge and may need a shaped or notched shelf end. GrainBench’s recessed-shelf option uses through dados. Do not substitute a stopped cut without redesigning the mating shelf detail.
Choose the connection before creating parts
In Plan Studio, select the case, enter dimensions and actual panel thickness, then choose the shelf connection. The cut list and machining sheets change with that choice. Case top and bottom connections remain separate from the shelf decision.
- Confirm the shelf can be installed in the stated assembly sequence.
- Check end gaps or groove engagement in the cut list.
- Keep shelf-support holes separate from case connector holes.
- Resolve the back, racking resistance and anti-tip installation for the actual build.
Use the shelf-spacing calculator to explore the openings, then review shelf thickness and support.
