Hardwood plywood for woodworking
Hardwood plywood is often a useful starting point for cabinet cases, built-ins, and bookshelf sides. Specify the core as carefully as the visible face veneer.

What to know about hardwood plywood
- Construction
- A veneer core uses alternating inner veneer layers. Other hardwood plywood products can use composite cores.
- Tradeoff
- Columbia’s core guide describes veneer core as lighter and better spanning than its particleboard and MDF alternatives.
- Fit
- Veneer-core thickness can vary more than highly engineered composite-core panels. These comparisons are product-specific.

Where it fits in a project
Start a bookcase comparison with the exact plywood product available locally. A face labeled oak or birch does not establish the panel’s stiffness, thickness tolerance, or edge quality.
GrainBench editorial interpretation, not a tested design or load rating.
Before you buy
- Request the core construction and product identification.
- Measure actual thickness before sizing grooves.
- Plan edge treatment and check face quality on both sides.
Plan the finish before the final cut
Protect the face veneer during preparation and follow the supplier’s sanding guidance. Compare an edge-band sample alongside the face before finishing.
