When it earns a place in your kit

Hand sanding complements power sanding on narrow edges, corners and details. Choose the process around the material and the finish instructions.

What to check before choosing

  • Match the abrasive format to the block or machine and the surface being prepared.
  • Choose a starting grit that removes the actual defect, then a sequence suitable for the finish.

A practical setup sequence

  1. Try the preparation on an offcut from the same material. Use a flat block where the edge must stay flat.

  2. Remove the previous scratch pattern before changing grit. Clear dust between stages so coarse particles do not continue scratching.

  3. Check under angled light and make a finish sample before preparing the visible project faces.

A common mistake to avoid

A very fine final grit does not erase deep scratches left by an earlier stage.
