PRACTICAL PLANNING GUIDE

Cabinet hardware for beginners: shelf supports, hinges and drawer slides

By GrainBench · Updated October 22, 2026

Choose the hardware before finalizing the parts it connects. A hinge affects the door fit, a slide affects drawer size, and a shelf support affects the drilling and shelf height.

What do you want the part to do?

Start with the job, then read the installation sheet for the exact hardware. This guide helps you collect the right information; it does not prescribe one universal drilling pattern or clearance.

Shelf supports: match the hole and the bearing

The stud goes into the case side. The bearing surface is the part the shelf rests on. Measure them separately: a shaped support can hold the shelf above the hole center by a different amount from a round pin.

  • Match the stud diameter to the hole. A 5 mm stud and a 1/4-inch stud are different sizes.
  • Check insertion length, hole depth and the material remaining behind the hole.
  • Locate matching holes from the same reference edge on both sides.
  • Check that the shelf seats on all supports with the planned clearance and adequate bearing.

Rockler’s linked support is an example of a 5 mm insertion stud with a separate projecting shelf platform. Its dimensions are not a specification for every shelf pin.

Door hinges: decide where the door sits

Overlay means the door covers some of the front edge or frame. Inset means it sits inside the opening. These are door positions, not interchangeable hinge settings.

OverlayInset
Original simplified top views. Sage is the door; tan is the case. Gaps and hinge geometry must come from the selected hardware.

Also identify the cabinet construction. A face-frame cabinet has a frame around the opening; a frameless cabinet uses the case sides at the front. Choose the hinge, any required mounting plate and attachment method as a compatible system.

Record door thickness, height, width, weight and the required opening clearance. Use the chosen system’s planning information for cup drilling, edge distance, gaps and hinge quantity. Blum’s documented models illustrate why a familiar-looking concealed hinge does not establish a universal cup depth.

Test the selected hardware on matching scrap before drilling the door. Adjustment is for fitting within the model’s range; it does not correct an incompatible hinge or a wrongly sized door.

Drawer slides: choose them before sizing the box

A side-mounted pair occupies space between the drawer box and the cabinet. Undermount systems fit beneath the drawer and can require different bottom, notch and attachment details. Choose one system first.

Original schematic for a side-mounted pair only. The two gaps are product-specific; undermount systems need their own drawer construction details.

For a symmetrical side-mount installation: outside drawer-box width = clear opening width − specified left space − specified right space. Use the installation sheet’s spaces and tolerances, not a number copied from another model.

As an arithmetic example only, a 500 mm clear opening with a specified 13 mm space on each side gives a 474 mm outside box width. Those example spaces are not a recommendation for your slide. Measure the opening front and back, and check obstructions along the full travel.

Check slide length, travel, mounting direction and the manufacturer’s load conditions. Accuride explains that its load rating includes the drawer itself as well as the contents. Do not interpret the rating as contents-only capacity or assume it stays the same after changing mounting orientation.

A buying checklist that prevents rework

  1. Write down the job and cabinet construction.
  2. Record the exact hardware model and matching fittings.
  3. Save its current installation sheet with the part dimensions.
  4. List required holes, clearances, fasteners and tools.
  5. Test a representative connection before machining the visible parts.

Keep model numbers and supplier information in My Builds. An entry in this library is a category guide, not a recommendation to buy a particular brand.

What Plan Studio includes

Plan Studio can describe removable shelf supports under its stated geometry checks. Its open cabinet has no doors, and its desktop has no drawers. These hinge and slide guides help with separately designed additions; the current PDF does not include their drilling, door sizes or drawer-box construction.
